Since 1996, the Year Round Program has helped triathletes reach their goals successfully.

An 80-mile ride is planned for Saturday, March 16 in San Diego County to honor Rod Nesmith, a U.S. Marine and triathlete who was stationed at nearby Camp Pendleton.

Nesmith, a staff sergeant, was one of two Marines killed in a helicopter training accident in February. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer, and five young children. He was a popular and well-known veteran of Ironman competitions and a member of the Camp Pendleton Triathlon Team.

Cyclists will depart Magee Park at 8 a.m. and head for Cabrillo Monument at Point Loma. Route cards will be provided, but organizers hope riders will remain together on the moderately paced ride.

Participants can bring a "special needs bag" to the start of the ride and organizers will have it waiting at the turnaround at Point Loma. They also plan to set up a water stop at the top of Torrey Pines.

The ride is free, but those interested in making a donation to the Rod Nesmith Fund can bring it to the ride or mail it to: The Rod Fund, c/o Steve Fredericks, 4902 Patina Court, Oceanside, CA 92057-7909. To learn more, contact Fredericks at
